Broadband Characterization of Anisotropic Engineered Composite

As part of the ESL Student Presentation Series (ESPS), Jae-Young Chung will be giving a presentation about his work on October 6, 2009. All ESL students are welcome, and new students are especially encouraged to attend. As always, pizza and pop will be served.
Abstract:
Recent interest in new materials, including metamaterials and magneto-dielectrics, for RF applications has provided strong impetus for measurement techniques to extract associated permittivity and permeability. Although material characterization is a classic area and has long been studied, traditional measurement techniques are often not readily available to characterize these new materials. It is necessary to characterize their broadband and anisotropic properties. Also, a challenge is the sample preparation as new materials don't allow invasive reshaping for insertion into a measurement fixture. With these issues in mind, material characterization techniques suitable for bulk and thin film type composites are developed in the ElectroScience Laboratory. The proposed techniques utilize the transmission/reflection method which extracts sample's permittivity and permeability from the measured S-parameters. In this presentation, a summary of material characterization fundamentals will be provided first, and then design considerations of the new measurement fixtures and material property extraction techniques will be discussed.
