Niru hails from Dhaka, Bangladesh where she received her BS in physics with honors in 1993. She received her MS in physics from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She worked for a year at Osram Sylvania and then came to OSU. She received a second MS in EE from from OSU and is currently working on her doctorate at ESL in the field of optics. Roberto Rojas is her advisor.
