Prof. Joel Johnson - Interview

Joel Johnson
Professor

I'm Professor Joel Johnson of the ElectroScience Laboratory.

1. What is your area of research?

First question that I’ve been asked to answer is what my area of research is. My area is the remote sensing area. I do a lot of work related to microwave remote sensing of the earth involving both active and passive sensor types. We do a pretty broad range of topics in that area including the modeling of remote sensing responses, the design of sensors and we also build our own hardware, go out and take data to try and demonstrate new ideas of microwave remote sensing.

2. What do you look for in prospective students?

In prospective students, I’m looking for people who have a strong academic background as well as a great desire to improve their engineering skills. I’m also looking for students who recognize the importance of remote sensing area and the potential it has for influencing the future of our planet.

3. What makes ESL unique for prospective students?

I think ESL is a unique place because of the broad range of electromagnetics related research that goes on here which includes both fundamental theoretical things as well as the design of hardware and going out, taking data. We cover the whole spectrum here and my group is kind of a microcosm of that. So I think it’s a great place for grad students to develop their engineering skills. We really want the best to come here and work up to their full potential. So I hope you’ll decide to join us here at ESL.
